The program of the Alma Mater Choir, made up of students from the Liszt Academy, is titled In the Footsteps of Medieval Texts. This subtitle is not just a thematic reference, but also the backbone of the concert: the compositions performed in this concert are connected in some way to medieval texts, whether through their direct musical settings or by evoking their spirit and atmosphere. While Zoltán Kodály’s Four Italian Madrigals and György Orbán’s composition guide the audience into the world of medieval Italian lyricism, Fernand Laloux’s Tantum ergo continues the tradition of Latin hymn poetry. Maurice Duruflé and Ola Gjeilo’s works, both written to the same text, are inspired by the purity of Gregorian chant. Javier Busto’s composition delves into the depths of the Christmas mystery, while Barnabás Szabó reinterprets Saint Francis of Assisi’s love for nature in a modern musical language. Tamás Beischer-Matyó’s world premiere composition, performed at the concert, also draws inspiration from medieval texts.
