Kodály often recalled the years of his childhood spent in Galánta as his happiest. Using melodies from a collection of dances from Galánta published in Vienna, and drawing inspirations from the music of the local Roma musicians, he composed his 1933 orchestral masterpiece. Continuing this folk-inspired thread, the programme features Bartók's Rhapsody No. 2 for violin and orchestra – which weaves together Romanian, Ruthenian, and Hungarian melodies – followed by his long-hidden Violin Concerto No. 1. Though an early work, the concerto only reached the public after the 1956 death of the composer's first love and the work's dedicatee, Stefi Geyer. Defying the traditional concerto structure, it consists of only two movements of strikingly different character.
The evening concludes with Schubert's Symphony in C major, famously known as the "Great" and rediscovered by Robert Schumann. In this work, Schubert treats the orchestral instruments almost as human voices, creating a unique and awe-inspiring sonic world. This magnificent repertoire is brought to life by the renowned violinist Barnabás Kelemen and one of Austria's leading symphonic ensembles, the Tonkünstler Orchestra.
